Zootopia Junior Novelization (Disney Zootopia), by Suzanne Francis

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery. This junior novelization features eight pages of full color inserts from Disney Zootopia, in theaters on March 4, 2016!

Disney does a Buddy Cop Movie... er, book.
By PocketSable
Zootopia is the story of Judy Hopps, a bunny rabbit from a small farming community who strives from a young age to become the first Bunny Police Officer. Finally achieving her dreams, she moves to Zootopia, the big city filled with Predator and Prey alike. Unfortunately, it's not all it's cracked up to be when her chief immediately demotes her to Traffic Duty. However, when an opportunity arrives for her to be involved in one of the biggest cases, she takes it immediately. The only catch is, she has 48 hours to solve it or else she'll lose her badge for good.

When I watched the trailer to the movie, I instantly fell in love with the idea of an anthropomorphic Disney buddy cop movie. So, when I seen the novelization I didn't hesitate to pick it up... despite the fact it looks less like a book and more like a leaflet you pick up from a travel agency. At 121 Pages (8 of those being color pages with screenshots of the movie and several pages only being half-pages) and with big print, it's a very small book. Which, means a very short read. Thankfully, it's a very, very enjoyable short read.

The book is a junior novelization, so it's not the most detailed or intricate writing. Thankfully and unlike some other junior novelizations, it's not dumbed down to the point of being insulting. Yes, there are some moments that took me out of the book for a moment by how much it was trying to sound like a kid's book, specifically with the overabundant use of the exclamation point ("She threw the giant donut over his head and around his body, trapping him inside. The weasel was stuck!"). However, these are few and far in between to be too annoying. Just know that readers who have an avid love of old style or new poetic style writing and don't like modern writing, might want to avoid this book. It's watered down modern writing at it's finest.

The plot was extremely predictable, however, that doesn't mean it wasn't enjoyable. It was more of an adventure than a mystery, as the actual 'twists' were too obvious to really hold any weight. The characters had some depth to them and some had nice character development. Judy (the bunny) and Nick (the fox) make wonderful leads as their by-the-book cop/sarcastic sidekick dynamic is both amusing and very reminiscent of shows like Castle and The Mentalist. There were some funny references to The Godfather (as anyone who has seen the trailers will know) and even a funny Frozen reference thrown in there that had me chuckling a bit.

The biggest surprise for me was the blatant overlying tones of modern day issues like racism. I'm usually not one to pick out "hidden meanings" or try to figure out if a writer was trying to say something else with their story but as an adult, it was so obvious it could as well have been smacking me in the face. Lines like "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone", "You're not like them./There's a THEM now?" as well as a discussion on how Predators are 'Savages' and prey want them to "get out/go home" riddle the book, more so in the last half. I'm not sure if a child reading/listening would pick up on these messages or just associate them being bullied (which is another theme present in this book) but, an adult or a teenager definitely will pick up on these right away. I'm curious to see how the movie will portray these issues and what the reaction from audiences will be.

Overall, this is a really quick, really fun buddy cop story with an underlying theme. It's also got the cute Disney-like quality to it while still staying true to those crime drama tropes that I personally enjoy. If you don't want the entire movie spoiled, you probably should avoid this. However, if you want to know what the movie is about or just interested in a crime fighting bunny and her wise cracking partner, then definitely pick this up for a quick enjoyable read.

Love more than the movie itself
By EL
So my five year old boy is in love with the book. He used to read hardcover books and board books, but he started reading chapter books for the last 5 months. He especially loves this 'junior novelization' books because he thinks (and I think, too) that it is very cool to read a movie.
It is a very handy and thin book. It takes about 30 minutes for my son to read the whole book.
I love the fact that even a younger child can easily read (especially he/she watched the movie), and it is fun to read.
I am very happy about these 'junior novelization' books, and so far I own 'Inside Out', 'Zootopia', and 'Finding Dory'. And I'll buy some more for my son.

Daughter read it the day she got it
By Amazon Customer
My 8 year old read through this in one day, which was great because she then went on to lend it out to her cousins. Haven't seen the movie so she couldn't compare the two, but she laughed through it thought it was highly entertaining. A good and challenging read, she is an advanced reader and when she starts it's hard to get her to stop. This took her a day in a couple hour intervals.

Don't Miss This One!
By Stacy
From the moment I opened the book, I was drawn into the characters and their mission. I couldn't put it down! The expertly developed plot carefully led me down a path and into a world that I had previously known very little about. This gripping piece of fiction carries with it a big dose of reality, and left me wanting both to read more from this author, and to help the cause of organ donation.

Gripping, and founded in fact
By Mallory Heart Reviews
Review: THE ORGAN BROKER by Stu Strumwasser

THE ORGAN BROKER is a gripping contemporary novel with a solid factual foundation. As the author explains, the shortage of legally available transplants is horrible, and consequently the black market for organs thrives ( and undoubtedly, some illegal brokers are yanking in money because of it--think of the money made during Prohibition in the U.S., but on a grander and global scale).

I really enjoyed this novel and anticipate more from this author. Surprisingly, I empathized with Jack (New York Jack), despite his behavior choices. I think his confidence--even in his strengths, he is less than self-confident, undoubtedly due to his abusive upbringing. I liked him, oddly enough.

I reviewed a digital ARC generously provided by the publisher and author via NetGalley for review purpose, without remuneration.

Promising author, good book
By book lover
This is an unusual book in that I found it heavy handed and amateurish in many respects, yet riveting to read. It is definitely a plot driven sort of story without a lot of character development or subtlety, but I was willing to overlook that because I was hooked into the story from early on. I read the Kindle version and there were a number of formatting errors (mostly paragraphs than ran together in dialogue) but I also didn't let that detract from my enjoyment of the story. I thought this was a first time author but have since found out he has an earlier book. The author shows promise. The book is worth reading for story line and theme.

Maravillosa
By Mapi

My girls are just getting to the age when they are going to start playing sports, and this was a good book to let them know it doesn't matter how big or small they are. I know they see big kids and wonder if they can do what those kids are doing. This book lets them know that at any size they can be a success. Good writing and great illustrations.

Wonderful resource for children & adults
By RollTideGirl
This book will give you and your children incredible knowledge of both science and animals while never having to worry about evolution theories popping up in the text. This title does not compromise God's Word and in fact, it stands firm on the truth of creation. This would make great supplemental material in homeschooling, be a wonderful reference book and children from elementary to high school students can use it and enjoy it. You will explore over 1,000 of God's most extraordinary creatures in this 256 full-color book. You will examine the diverse anatomy, behavior and habitats of all types of animals. It includes information about the smallest microscopic worms to the largest animals God ever created, the whales. Filled with fascinating facts and intriguing animal records this book will teach you and your child all about the amazing animals God created. Our children love to learn about animals and are fascinated by their behaviors, habitats and lives. We often found the kids sitting in the floor reading this book together. This book covers simple animals, worms/snails/starfish, insects & other anthropods, fish, amphibians and reptiles, birds and mammals. The kids learned interesting things about animals like: The giant clam, tridacna, lives in Pacific Ocean and its shell can be over 4 feet in length and it can weigh as much as 725 pounds! Our 6 year old loved the Giant Anteater information as that is currently his favorite animal. And want to know which animal our kids were most intrigued by so far? Look up "Gulper Eel" ~ The picture of it in this book was so fascinating to them we actually spent a whole afternoon looking up more about it online!

The Great Big Book of Everything
By Karcher
My 2 year old daughter loves this book. We bought it for her because she watches Stanley on Disney Channel and wanted a "Great Big Book of Everything" just like Stanley. This book fits the bill. While there is a lot of textual information about the animals, a younger child can enjoy just looking at the pictures, which generally fill up over half of the pages. My daughter is now at the point where she will ask me what animal I like, and then she will find it in the book.

The only criticism I have of the book is that the first couple sections are on simple animals like worms, and that they are given equal time to mammals, which is what younger children are most interested in.

The House of God, by Samuel Shem

By turns heartbreaking, hilarious, and utterly human, The House of God is a mesmerizing and provocative novel about Roy Basch and five of his fellow interns at the most renowned teaching hospital in the country.

Struggling with grueling hours and sudden life-and-death responsibilities, Basch and his colleagues, under the leadership of their rule-breaking senior resident known only as the Fat Man, must learn not only how to be fine doctors but, eventually, good human beings.

A phenomenon ever since it was published, The House of God was the first unvarnished, unglorified, and uncensored portrait of what training to become a doctor is truly like, in all its terror, exhaustion and black comedy. With more than two million copies sold worldwide, it has been hailed as one of the most important medical novels ever written.

The real deal if you're in medicine, scary for the layman
By USAF Veteran
There are all kinds of things I hate about this book. I hate remembering how long I would go without sleep and the psychic torture that an internship inflicts on you. I hated the depersonalization of patients. I hated the sexual escapades. Most of all, I hated having in print the real feelings of an intern who has been up for three days - praying on the way to the ER that that Nursing Home Gomer with 20 fatal diagnoses would have the decency to croak before you got there so you could get an extra five minutes of sleep or a stale doughnut before the cafeteria closed again.
Shem portrays masterfully the jumble of emotions of a typical intern. There is a superficial level of glossy brown-nosing that got you into med school in the first place. Buzz words like compassion, continuity of care and empathy are used with the teaching physicians and in meetings. Then there is a deeper level of survival where you would kill your mother for 5 minutes of sleep or being able to crap without the code blue pager going off. This level is usually not discussed or written about in many of the typical intern coming-of-age books out there. Not because it isn't true, but because it's uncomfortable and offensive to non-physicians. Shem is the master of this level of medical thinking. No one else even comes close. Shem approaches but doesn't quite get to an even more primal level - that of duty. This level is what keeps an intern from punching his residency directors or the arrogant surgeon who asks him "What is the difference between a sh*thead and a brown-noser" and then tells you the answer is depth perception.(True story) It's what makes you do your best when you know the patient is hopeless or even abusive as you try your best to save them from themselves or some disease.
The humor is black as night and the sex is soft-core porn, according to my nephew in medical school to whom I sent a copy of this book.
House of God has two profound themes. The first is a detailed description of medicine and medical training. This theme is presented with black humor, and some (but not as much as you think) exaggeration. I have read nothing that does this better. The second theme of the book is universal, however. It is the theme of Man vs. World and the World wins, but the Man is too maimed to know it.
The book still disturbs and haunts me because Shem puts in print graphically and eloquently some of the thoughts and occurences that we don't even admit to ourselves.

House of Reality
By MD resident
It's interesting to hear non-medical opinions on HOG. This book is actually not that humorous. I can see how it "seems" to be; with all the dark morbid humor and the LAWS. A colleage told me not to read this book until i had finished my 3rd year of MD-school. Why? Until you put yourself on the ward, this book doesn't mean much to you. I didn't believe him and read it at the end of my 2nd year. I read it again at the end of my 3rd year. It was like i was reading a different novel. There is no way to clearly describe the sensation of having 7 admissions on call...all gomers....trying desperatly to BUFF and TURF them.
This book is a must read for the doctor to be. The nonmedical world has to realise that what seems as perverse dark sick humor (gomers, turfing, not doing anything, the only good admission is a dead admission) is merely an attempt to survive the onslaught of internship. Balance fatigue with limited knowledge and throw in some unparralled responsibility and you get a taste of what it's like.
House of God does just that.
Oh.. and never ever.... go to a teaching hospital in July. :)

The "Catch 22" of the medical world.
By Yuval Ben- Amnon,MD.
I have read this book three times: When I was a first year medical student I found it to be exaggerated. When I was in my intern year I found it to be an understatement. Reading it for the third time in the middle of my residency allowed me to have a more mature perspective of this book. I find it to have a striking resemblence to another classic: "Catch 22" by Joseph Heller. I will start by saying that both books are NOT great literature masterpieces . They do not stand in one line with Joyce, Amos Oz, Steinback or Hemmingway and as a work of art they therefore deserve , in my opoinion 2 or 3 stars of rating. They do share, however, a unique quality which is this: They both manage to capture in an astonishing accurracy, through sarcasm and absurd, all that is twisted, wrong and cruel in the systems they deal with. Being both a doctor and an IDF officer, I can testify from personal experience that both the military and the medical field have a lot in common , mainly that they both are a stressfull, wearing enviroments. Shem's accurate perception lead this book to being the sharpest description of this enviroment so far, just as "Catch 22" was in its times I therefore share the enthusiasm of the majority of the reviewers of this book, as much as I can identify with the ones who found it disappointing in the literary sense. It therfore gets a rating of 4.

Amazon.com Review
MY TOP 5 ASYLUMS By Madeleine Roux

While writing ASYLUM, I turned to some of the following hospitals and institutions for inspiration, to bring in that real world touch. Some of the stories and histories I stumbled across were almost too intense and gruesome to be believed.

I. Norwich State Hospital for the Insane

Preston, Connecticut 1904 ― 1996

When most people think of an asylum, they probably picture a giant looming mansion that looks something like Norwich State Hospital for the Insane. It has one of those iconic, red brick exteriors with columns and a steep roof. The hospital is also notable for its maze of underground passageways. It’s considered by creep and ghost aficionados to be extremely haunted. Several shows have featured the hospital, including the popular series Ghost Hunters.

II. Whittingham Asylum

Lancashire, England 1869 ― 1995

Whittingham Asylum, charming and even quaint on the outside, makes the list if only for its sheer size. Whittingham was virtually a miniature city, and its expansive grounds included a brewery, post office, and even its own brass band. It was also the sight of some seriously scary allegations, with an inquiry in the 1960s that included reports of cruelty and fraud, complaints that were kept quiet with threats. Reportedly, some wards were infested with vermin, while others were left freezing cold. There were even rumors of a “wet towel treatment” involving a cold, wet towel wrapped around the patient’s neck until they passed out.

III. Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Louisville, Kentucky 1910 ― 1962

The architecturally stunning Waverly Hills was built to house a sudden influx of tuberculosis patients in the county, but closed after only fifty years when medical advances rendered the facility obsolete. Considered to be one of the most haunted hospitals in the eastern United States, it has played host to scores of reality TV shows about the paranormal, including Scariest Places on Earth and Ghost Hunters. It gets creepier―there are currently plans to renovate the hospital into a hotel for those looking to have a spooky spot to stay.

IV. Lier Mental Hospital

Buskerud County, Norway 1926 ― 1986

Perhaps the scariest thing about Lier Mental Hospital is its murky involvement in experimentation linked to pharmaceutical companies from the United States. This postwar hospital was used for experimentation and research into lobotomies, LSD, electroshock therapy and more.

V. Topeka State Hospital

Topeka, Kansas 1872 ― 1997

Topeka State Hospital may look cute and charming on the outside, but on the inside it was home to some unbelievably dark rumors. By far the creepiest allegations leveled against the hospital? (Brace yourself, it’s pretty gross.) There are stories of patients strapped down for so long that their skin began to grow around the straps. Yeesh. Nowadays, you can sometimes hear music playing from inside the abandoned hospital and spot shadows peering out at the windows.

Heather Brewer Interviews Madeleine Roux

HB: The imagery was so vivid in ASYLUM and the photographs throughout were just gorgeous―was it based on anywhere you’ve visited personally?

MR: The admittedly limited travel I’ve done in Europe included some incredible ruins and castles. There’s a feeling you get in those places, a sort of wonder and terror that you just don’t feel in new buildings. I tried to draw on those memories for Brookline. I also grew up in an old Victorian farmhouse, and . . . I don’t want to say it’s haunted but there were certainly times it felt haunted. To this day, when I visit my parents, I feel eyes on me at night in the hallway. The hairs on the back of your neck go up and you can sense there’s history there present with you. I wanted that same feeling to come through with Brookline.

HB: I felt really connected to Dan Crawford, your main character. What part of your fabulous mind did he come from?

MR: I was kind of a weird kid. I loved school. I wasn’t so much a loner as a gigantic nerd, always with my nose in a book or writing my own scripts and stories. There’s a good bit of my own insecurities and childhood memories in Dan; that same geek pride mixed with a constant fear that maybe life would be easier if I veered more toward the mainstream. Writing a male perspective is intimidating in the sense that I wanted it to feel authentic, so I would stop every once in a while and ask a friend if it was reading correctly to them. Having honest buddies helped, it always does for writing. They weren’t shy about saying, “I’m sorry but no guy would do/think/act that way, try again.”

HB: Has horror always appealed to you? If not, why now, why this story? If so . . . well . . . same question.

MR: The first two novels I did had a certain creep factor, too, since they were about zombies and survival. The irony here is that I’m a huge wuss when it comes to scary movies. I spent most of Cabin In the Woods whimpering in someone else’s lap. I’m not good with scary movies or gore or anything like that, but I find myself drawn to that kind of story again and again. It’s like I know it’s going to keep me up all night but I can’t help myself. I think that’s probably common, though . . . . We all test ourselves now and again, see where our boundaries and limits are. I get a kick out of pushing those limits for myself and exploring the darker parts of my imagination. My life isn’t all that adventurous, so writing darker stories gives me a chance to indulge in the more morbid thoughts that cross my mind.

HB: I know you probably get asked this a lot, but what’s your favorite piece of writing advice for the writers out there?

MR: It comes from Neil Gaiman and is infuriatingly straightforward and simple. “How do you do it? You do it. You write. You finish what you write.” And it’s true. As I’m sure you know, there’s no magic button. Sometimes you can’t write a sentence and other times you can’t stop, but just sitting down and making yourself do it is the key. You have to practice. You have to do the work, over and over. He also has another great piece of advice somewhere (I’m an unabashed Neil fangirl, I can’t help it) about getting out and living life, and not feeling upset or pressured if you don’t have a huge well of experience to draw on. The best inspiration comes from falling in love, falling out of it, getting your heart broken, just being present and showing up, you know? You won’t have anything to draw from if you guard yourself too closely. You have to risk life changing you in order to have something there to write about.

HB: What’s next from the shadowed mind of Madeleine Roux? What are you working on, and when can I have it? :)

MR: I’m notorious for starting new projects and then abandoning them, but I’ve had a gritty YA fantasy series cooking in my head for a while now. I’ve been taking down tons of notes for it and I’ve even started a few chapters, so right now I hope that has wings and takes off. You can have it the second I manage to get it all down!

From Publishers Weekly
Horror author Roux makes a strong YA debut with this creepy tale of a haunted asylum and the teenagers who are drawn to it. When Dan Crawford attends a summer program at New Hampshire College, he ends up housed in Brookline, a former asylum now being turned into a dorm. Along with fellow students Abby and Jordan, he starts exploring the basement of the dorm, where (conveniently) old records are stored. As they investigate, the students are plagued by horrifying dreams, and Dan starts to have blackouts, discovering strange unsent texts and emails and learning about conversations that he doesn't remember. Students are being attacked in the dorms, and as Dan begins to unravel his own ties to the asylum, he wonders if he might be responsible for the crimes. Roux (aided by unsettling photo illustrations of abandoned asylums and tormented patients) creates an entertaining and occasionally brutal horror story that reveals the enduring impact of buried trauma and terror on a place. Open questions at the end invite a sequel, though there's also a good sense of closure. Ages 14-up. Agent: Kate McKean, Howard Morhaim Literary Agency.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Dan is thrilled to be spending the summer before his senior year at the New Hampshire College Prep program, where he'll have a chance to meet other studious teenagers. He doesn't mind that his dorm, Brookline, was once an asylum for the criminally insane. In fact, Dan is curious about the institution's history and begins exploring Brookline's old passageways at night. At first, Dan and his best friends at NHCP, Abby and Jordan, think it's fun to sneak around in the dark and look at old patient records, but soon the things they find begin to frighten them. Dan starts receiving ominous notes, and he is plagued by nightmares in which he sees Brookline as if he were really there, all those years ago. When people start dying, Dan is convinced that the killer's identity is buried in his dorm's darkest history and that his own strange connection to the institution may be the key to stopping the murders. Eerie black-and-white pictures throughout the book add to the creep factor of this story, but unfortunately many images are redundant photographs of Dan's notes, while others seem unrelated to the text. The plot drives forward too quickly, with some circumstances and events feeling forced. Dan meets Abby and Jordan on his first day, for instance, and within hours they carry on with the rapport of lifelong friends. Mystery lovers will be disappointed with the lack of answers and explanations here. Hand this one to horror fans who don't mind a few loose ends.—Liz Overberg, Darlington School, Rome, GA

Creepy Campus Thriller
By jen719
I had heard wonderful things about this book and I was very impressed with Asylum from the very beginning. It is a dark, creepy and dramatic book about a young man who lives in a renovated mental hospital and finds that after mysterious circumstances that his dorm has developed a life of its own. Dan Crawford is a typical teenager who spends too much time involved in his studies of science and history but jumps at the opportunity to experience college life at the prestigious New Hampshire College prep program for the summer. He finds that the school was just what he was looking for and immediately starts to make friends with fellow students, Abby and Jordan. One night, they decide to investigate the abandoned basement of their dorm that used to be Brookline's main office and holds case files of the asylum's infamous residents. After their midnight excursion, strange things start to happen with no logical explanation and Dan finds that some secrets should have stayed locked away in Brookline's abandoned rooms.

Madeleine Roux's Asylum is a haunting novel that provides a thrilling mystery and creepy locales that will keep you up at night. The pictures that are laced throughout the novel are a perfect addition to the story and will make the reader feel as though they are there with Dan and had me jumping at every noise that I heard. Asylum is a well-written novel that I know people will enjoy and is now one of my top books for 2013. I'm looking forward to reading more from Ms. Roux but it will be awhile before I sleep without the light on.

Review of Asylum
By Lydia
I am a pansy when it comes to scary stories. I will readily admit that. The book can be even not well written and I'll still be pansy. Add pictures into the mix and yeah, I'll be sleeping with my light on for at least 2-3 nights after finishing the book (and sometimes during if I just can't finish the book in one setting). Asylum was one of those books - I was so tired and haunted by the images in the book that it was a two night read for me...and the result was I spent a few nights restless in my sleep due to having to have my light on.

I don't know about you, but the idea of an old mental asylum is only second to an abandoned carnival ground on a terror-ranking list. When I was in my late teens, I accompanied a boyfriend and my sister to an abandoned penitentiary in eastern Wyoming. It was Halloween and the workers had a blast filling each room with re-enactments of terrible things that may have happened. Asylum provoked the memory of that experience through the medium of the included photos. Not to mention - anytime I see a picture with eyes scratched out on it I get massive heebie-jeebies.

That's not to say that Roux wrote a story that could have creeped me out. In fact, without the addition of the pictures, I think I might have been a bit bored by the story. It was a pretty typical one - group of kids get locked up, essentially, in a creepy old building and start investigating its history. I got some massive Scooby Doo vibes from it. But Roux did take it a step darker, which was necessary, with the inclusion of the photos. The photos (and their credits are included at the back of the book) are a story in themselves. So much horror contained in each, it is worth picking up the book just to examine them.

I don't know of many kids that could handle the level of creepy that Asylum boasted - the photos might just have been a little over the top. But I leave that judgment up to the parents. For me, those photos were enough and I won't be able to get through a night in the near future without having that one little thought in the back of my mind that something might just happen once I click my light off for the night.

more for the younger reader
By Linda Bradley
Characters good, plot good, setting good, yet somehow Asylum feels like it was written for a young adult audience. It starts out strong, but ends up quite like a Nancy Drew mystery. I was somewhat disappointed.

The Trouble With Testosterone: And Other Essays On The Biology Of The Human Predicament, by Robert M. Sapolsky

Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize

From the man who Oliver Sacks hailed as “one of the best scientist/writers of our time,” a collection of sharply observed, uproariously funny essays on the biology of human culture and behavior.

In the tradition of Stephen Jay Gould and Oliver Sacks, Robert Sapolsky offers a sparkling and erudite collection of essays about science, the world, and our relation to both. “The Trouble with Testosterone” explores the influence of that notorious hormone on male aggression. “Curious George’s Pharmacy” reexamines recent exciting claims that wild primates know how to medicate themselves with forest plants. “Junk Food Monkeys” relates the adventures of a troop of baboons who stumble upon a tourist garbage dump. And “Circling the Blanket for God” examines the neurobiological roots underlying religious belief.

Drawing on his career as an evolutionary biologist and neurobiologist, Robert Sapolsky writes about the natural world vividly and insightfully. With candor, humor, and rich observations, these essays marry cutting-edge science with humanity, illuminating the interconnectedness of the world’s inhabitants with skill and flair.

Amazon.com Review
As a professor of biology and neuroscience at Stanford and a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant," Robert Sapolsky carries impressive credentials. Best of all, he's a gifted writer who possesses a delightfully devilish sense of humor. In these essays, which range widely but mostly focus on the relationships between biology and human behavior, hard and intricate science is handled with a deft touch that makes it accessible to the general reader. In one memorable piece, Sapolsky compares the fascination with tabloid TV to behavior he's observed among wild African baboons. "Rubber necks," notes the professor, "seem to be a common feature of the primate order." In the title essay of The Trouble with Testosterone, Sapolsky ruminates on the links, real or perceived, between that hormone and aggression.

From Library Journal
Ask fans of popular science to name the best science essayists today, and the name of Sapolsky should not immediately come to mind. This book should help to change that. Sapolsky, a biologist at Stanford and a contributor to Discover magazine, writes on the biological aspects of human behavior. Subjects in this provocative and highly literate collection include male aggression, the onset of puberty, the psychology of guilt, and possible connections between madness and religious experience. The author implicitly invites readers to ponder two recurring themes: there are no simple answers to questions of why people act the way they do, and even the most deviant behaviors can be seen as "normal" behaviors taken to extremes. This book offers lots to think about. Highly recommended.?Gregg Sapp, Univ. of Miami Lib., Coral Gables, Fla.

From Kirkus Reviews
A sparkling set of essays by MacArthur awardee Sapolsky (Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers, 1993; Biology and Neuroscience/Stanford), who is not at all afraid to go out on a (primate) limb to discuss biology, brain, and behavior. As a veteran baboon watcher, he has much to say on stress and hormones, adolescence, and other fascinating topics. In some essays he is merely out to set the record straight. So we learn in the title essay that higher testosterone levels do not increase aggression, but that aggression increases testosterone levels. Even if you give massive amounts of hormone to a monkey who, let us say, is number three in a dominance hierarchy, he will tyrannize numbers four and five but still kowtow to the two above him. Other baboon-based essays become springboards for discussion of commonalities between them and us, for example, in voyeurism: Baboons like to watch, too. They are easy targets for junk food, and adolescence is a markedly stress-filled period in which male baboons appear to be programmed to leave the troop and join another, invariably as low man on the totem pole. In other essays Sapolsky makes perturbing leaps: Are the sundry neurological disorders he glibly describes (epilepsy, Huntington's disease, Tourette's syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder) truly representative of a continuum of behavior? Are the founders and leaders of religion ``schizotypal'' personalities? Arguable, certainly, but always interesting. Elsewhere Sapolsky, who summers in Kenya, writes of the predicament of the African middle class- -infatuated with Western diets and cultures while trapped in the persistent rhythms of the old ways. In the end it is the refreshing honesty of this scientist- teacher, his zeal to speculate as well as to clearly present the facts, that engages the reader. That, and a deft and often witty way with words. (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A great collection of essays by a brilliant writer
By Amazon Customer
Is it possible for a man who has won a MacArthur genius grant to be underappreciated? Reading this set of essays I have to wonder why Sapolsky is not as widely read and commented on as Dawkins, Sacks, Gleick and those other few at the absolute pinnacle of popular science writing.

The tales here cover his familiar subjects: the mind and emotions (one is tempted to say the soul), stress and our reactions, and how brain chemistry effects us every day. He also relates anecdotes from his baboon observations, and in the most touching essay talks about his father's life and death. The essays are gathered from several years and several magazines and each stands on its own...there is no particular theme beyond the aforementioned subject matter. The best is probably about how we sometimes take on the identity of another: illustrated by an anecdote where he watched Stephen Hawking give a lecture "through" the voice and body of a vigorous young graduate student, and Sapolsky's own odd reaction to his father's death. It is interesting, mildly disturbing and raises some ideas about individuality I certainly had never considered. In another essay, Sapolsky describes why so many illnesses have the same symptoms (its because it is our own immune systems that make us feel so crummy). Elsewhere he draws parallels betweens kids going off to college and male baboons switching tribes, and in yet another essay compares aging in baboons and humans.

So, should you read this book?

"Yes", if you have read other Sapolsky books and are looking for more.

"Yes", if you have heard about Sapolsky and want an introduction before diving into one of the larger works (though I still think 'A Primate's Memoir' is the best place to start).

"Yes", if you are interested in the brain and/or like good science writing.

Brain food from a fantastic teacher...
By T. Ross
The same qualities that make Sapolsky one of the most popular teachers at Stanford come through in his writing. Although I was an English major, I took his human behavioral biology class because the man has a well-deserved reputation for being entertaining and thought-provoking. If you attend one of his lectures, you'll find students from all disciplines, all wide-awake. Sapolsky makes the biology of the human condition come to life without compromising the integrity of its scientific underpinnings. This book is especially recommended to those with an interest in biology or psychology, but the appeal is universal.

A marvelous read to squeeze between scholarly articles
By prime8
Robert Sapolsky has written a wonderful, fun and terribly informative book, and it's a lovely break to anyone who wants to put their endocrinology articles aside for a night and read something a little smoother. I loved "Curious George's Pharmacy" so much I devoted a day in my Great Apes syllabus to a discussion of pharmacognacy and assigned that chapter as a reading. I also quite enjoyed the last chapter on the "heterozygote's advantage" of schizotypal disorder as the root of major world religions (and read the bit about Martin Luther's clear obsessive-compulsive behaviors aloud to my boyfriend, where we both got a good gasp and a laugh). As an anthropologist and a student of primate endocrinology myself, I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the biological basis of human behavior.

From Library Journal
The late Sam Walton was one of the shrewdest and richest merchants in America. Centered on the building of his Wal-Mart empire, his book, like fellow magnate Sandra Kurtzig's CEO: Building a $400 Million Company from Ground Up ( LJ 5/1/91), is light on biography. However, readers will enjoy the folksy narrative of the small-town millionaire who revolutionized retail distribution. Walton also addresses accusations against him, such as running the competition out of town. Coauthor Huey does a fine job of incorporating candid testimonials from family members and associates, who thought Walton's ideas were sometimes silly. Shortly after Walton's death, the book was given an overly sentimental postscript (a minor detraction) and rushed into print. Highly recommended for public and academic business collections.

And it's a story about believing in your idea even when maybe some other folks don't, and about sticking to your guns. Sam Walton. Meet a genuine American folk hero cut from the homespun cloth of America's heartland: Sam Walton, who turned a single dime store in a hardscrabble cotton town into Wal-Mart, the largest retailer in the world. The undisputed merchant king of the late twentieth century, Sam never lost the common touch. Here, finally, Sam Walton tells his extraordinary story in his won inimitable words. Genuinely modest, but always sure of his ambitious and achievements, Sam shares his thinking in a candid, straight-from-the-shoulder style. What can I say: This is a brilliantly written book about an incredible individual telling his spectacular success story. If you're reading this review, do yourself a favor: stop wasting time and start reading this book instead.

If you're still foolishly reading my review, here's why I love this book so much:
- Sam tells his story from beginning to end, and explains his thinking and principles behind his decisions. He is extremely humble and down to earth.
- Sam will tell a story from his point of few and then on the next page, there will be long quote from someone involved giving their angle on the same story.
- I did my MBA a few years ago; this book should have been required reading. Anyone who understands Sam's principles and applies them will be extremely successful.

Lastly, the people who haven't even read this book and are giving it one star reviews...I hope someday they accomplish enough in life to be worthy to lick Sam's shoes. I wonder if anyone has ever worked harder, improved the lives of more people, and took less for himself than Sam Walton.

The USA is in desperate need of an education on free trade and economics. People believe that trade, robots, etc "destroy jobs." While you are hating robots and trade, why not add shovels to your list? One shovel destroys the jobs of 100 men digging with spoons. Don't stop at shovels. Every tool that improves efficiency and makes our lives better "destroys" jobs.

The secret to high paying jobs and being able to pay employees the highest wage possible is to give them the best tools possible so they can maximize their production. Every job that is eliminated by increased efficiency frees up a worker to do something else. After you're done reading this book, read Henry Ford's "My Life and Work." He paid extremely high wages and constantly hired more people while constantly cutting costs and improving efficiency.

As unassuming -and wise- as its author, Sam Walton
By Kindle Customer
"Made in America" is as unassuming as its author, Sam Walton. It is written in very colloquial plain "American" English, so you can almost image Mr. Walton, in his death bed, dictating this little book of wisdom. It is filled with many pearls of wisdom, on how to be a small business owner, on never giving up and always trying new things. I am surprised more people don't read this little known book, given that Sam Walton has to go down in history (maybe Bill Gates?) as the most successful entrepreneur in American history. The book is not filled with technical lexicon found in MBA programs. It is a non nonsense book, told from Walton's perspective. I recommend this book.

Sam, and klan you are such down home folk, never woulda guessed you'd all become filthy rich.
By StevenM
All I can say is when reading this Sam seems like such a good ol boy. A story starting with his humble beginnings, oh, and how he'd work his store managers constantly, yea lotta them got rich in the process. Decent, honest, family man, who started out with a few Ben a Franklin stores. He, saw what was happening in the sixties, big stores like K Mart, Moreway, Arlans, etc. He wanted to compete, well you know who won ! Despite those who dislike Walmart and refuse to step inside, you really need to admit that they have driven prices down. But, the cost had been the small business owner, and small town / and city business districts have been mostly laid to ruin. It was bound to happen, just like it has in most other catagories, retail and wholesale. Just a few major players.
