I loved In Stitches!

I bought this book after reading one of Dr. Youn's articles on cnn.com. I always enjoy reading autobiographies and memoirs, and this is one of my favorites by far. Some parts were so funny that I laughed out loud and couldn't stop thinking about them the next day. There were also moments that were extremely touching and a bit sad. The narrative is witty, descriptive and moves along at a good pace.

Dr. Youn covers a lot of ground in this book, but in the end you really have a good sense of what a funny, genuine, caring person he is, and the ups and downs he experienced on the road to becoming a renowned plastic surgeon. I really had a hard time putting it down and am definitely planning on giving it a second read through.

If you are looking for a great summer read, do not hesitate to pick up this book. You will not be disappointed!

Tony Youn keeps us in stitches with his memoir

It's a bit off-putting when someone as young as my son feels compelled to write a memoir. So this book had a strike against it before I turned to the first page. "Double D's", he writes, "Pam Anderson, eat your heart out. Too bad they're attached to a fourteen-year-old boy." From that point on, I was smitten by Dr. Youn's story-telling and couldn't put the book down until I (too quickly) reached the last page.

Youn starts out by describing how it feels to grow up as only one of two Asian-Americans in a small Midwestern town. Not only did he have to deal with being "different" from everyone else, he also had "Coke-bottle glasses, Hannibal Lecter headgear, a bowl cut, and a protruding jaw that grew even faster than his comic-book collection."

The first part of the book is a coming of age story with Youn agonizing about fitting in, being cool, and most importantly, finally getting a girlfriend. While he is worrying over these typical teen goals, his father, a hard-working Korean immigrant ObGyn, has other plans for Tony. "Doctor is the only thing. Every other job is not good for you. You have to make Daddy proud." In fact from the time he is born, Daddy, wants Anthony to not only be a doctor, but..."A Surgeon. Vascular. Big money"...no wait, not vascular, "Transplant surgery. That's the big money...One surgery. Ten thousand dollah. For one hour. Early retirement. Mercedes-Benz. Condo in Florida..." And, of course, he should marry a nice Korean girl.

In the sixth grade, Tony's jaw starts growing (for reasons that are not clear). He envisions himself a "cartoon kid with a massive jutting Jay Leno jaw" - not so good for your self-esteem. He deals with it by becoming, in his words, Tony Youn, nerd! But all that changes when he is sent away to boarding school to "get a jump on my classes and begin studying for the SATS" (still two years away). Here for the first time he meets some very cool Korean-American kids. They take him under their wings and by the time he heads back to Greenville, Michigan, his home town, he is cool. He is also taller (six feet) and now has "a new haircut, a new wardrobe, new designer glasses, and new music." He makes it into the in-crowd. Right after graduation from high school he gets surgery to reduce the size of his jutting jaw. By college, he says, "my ugly stage [is] behind me."

His college years are all about studying and getting the grades to get into medical school...except for the time he spends trying to finally to make it with the girls. He shares some pretty funny stories about his failures in this arena - it is "chick lit" only for guys.

Then he starts med school and has an experience I think many of us had--he meets a handful of fellow students who form his inner circle and go on to become life-long friends. He studies hard, aces his rotations, and toys briefly with becoming a family doc. "Family practice," Daddy says when Tony tells him his plans, "You make no money...Work all day, all night, weekend, no money. Go broke!....Surgery! One proceejah, two thousand dollars." Later, Daddy changes his mind. "If you want to go into family practice, it's okay," he tells him. "Daddy understands. You do what makes you happy." But, Tony still hasn't told him his other transgression, one he assumes is even more serious, he not only has a girlfriend prior to finishing med school (a no-no per Daddy), the but Amy, also a medical student, is not Korean!

Best Medical Memoir I've Read All Year

I've read ALL the medical memoirs - Atul Gawande's, Another Day In the Frontal Lobe, Weekends @ Bellevue --- you name it. And this was by far my favorite in recent memory. Dr. Youn is hilarious and his wry, sarcastic humor leaps off the page. His perspective on medical school and on his demanding Asian parents was so honest and his observations stuck with me for days. He's obviously an extremely caring person, but also doesn't hesitate to reveal some of his inner thoughts, including that he originally went to medical school....for the girls. I really really enjoyed this book - I recommend it to anyone who wants a laugh and an interesting story.

About the Author
Emile Zola (1840-1902) was a French novelist and critic, the founder of the Naturalist movement in literature. Among Zola's most important works is his famous Rougon-Macquart cycle (1871-1893), which included such novels as L'Assomoir (1877), about the suffering of the Parisian working-class, Nana (1880), dealing with prostitution, and Germinal (1885). Roger Whitehouse has taught at the Sorbonne and at Bolton Institute, where he is a research fellow.

"It must be easy to kill, then! Everybody did it!"

Although I haven't read the entire Rougon-Macquart series - not even close - I think there's a good chance that this is the most violent and shocking entry in Zola's 20-book cycle. This novel (no. 17 in the series) is populated with characters who are battling violent impulses - or "the beast within" of the title. When all is said and done, it would appear that not a single person's hands are clean. Everyone contributes in some way to the destructive and inhumane deeds scattered throughout this grim tale, which is said to have inspired later writers of "noir" crime fiction.

Cavernous train stations and a desolate house located right next to the railroad tracks are among the suitably atmospheric backdrops, and the locomotives that barrel across the countryside are an extension of human beings who mindlessly destroy those in their path. Zola provides some wonderful, cutting commentary on the technological progress that railways of the day are supposed to epitomize. This, after a horrific derailment: "What did it matter that a few nameless people had come to an end beneath their wheels? The dead had been carried away, and the blood had been cleaned up. People were on the move again - towards a bright, new future!"

As the story moves along, Zola explores violence through the perspectives of multiple characters. The number of incidents do indeed pile up, but I don't want to give away the story (unlike the Penguin book jacket; more on that later). Typical for Zola, the story builds up to a terrific conclusion - in this case, one of the most exciting in all of 19th-century literature. Zola's portrayal of the corrupt and unjust legal system is also illuminating. Those familiar with this series will not be surprised that there are several amazing set pieces in "The Beast Within," including the description of a train plowing through a blizzard to get to Paris. There are a few flaws. The motives that Zola ascribes to one character's violent acts aren't entirely convincing. The drama can also be a tad over-heated and heavy-handed at times.

A note on the Penguin edition: I appreciate some of the features of Penguin paperbacks such as the new, larger font size and the helpful explanatory notes. However, I certainly don't appreciate the completely artless story summary on the back cover, which in the span of a few short sentences gives away at least four spoilers. Please, Penguin - describe plots in more general terms so that readers can discover stories for themselves.

Oh, and one more thing - while reading this book the thought will probably cross your mind that it would make a thrilling movie. In fact, several movie adaptations have been made, most notably by Jean Renoir and Fritz Lang. I haven't seen those films, but the movie posters look extremely stylish and cool!

Both films made from the novel are better for today's readers. Zola wanted to shock people and he did that in the 1890s. However, he's a bit too interested in description and too determined about character for today. Still, it makes a decent read if you have a few spare days.

"Who could fathom the shadowy mind of the beast within?"

While this new translation of "La Bete Humaine" starts off a bite more melodramatic than some of Zola's other works, in the end the author succeeds in drawing the reader into a nightmarish world of infidelity, greed, abuse, murder and madness.

This is a thought-provoking work - equal in many respects to "Crime and Punishment" - although at times Zola's depiction of blood lust and violence (especially violent acts committed against women) are hard to handle. Yet, however sensationalized or gratuitous the violence and depravity seems, I hope it is obvious that this is meant to be a social commentary rather than a celebration of certain kinds of reprehensible behavior. Another possible criticism is that there are too many ideas floating around in this novel - Zola in fact formed the plot by combining two separate story ideas into one book, which I think makes it less focused than some of his other works ("Germinal" or "L'Assommoir" for example) - and the author's ideas about heredity and crime seem less believable today than perhaps they would have to contemporary readers.

Yet, these points aside, "The Beast Within" is still a fascinating read and a deeply unsettling look at the human condition.

Pretty Darn Good

It's a small book by page count and by size, and the contents while interesting and VERY MOTIVATING are thin .... Nothing new. What I'll say is that the duo are motivating and reassuring for people in an awful marketplace, so I gave it to two older friends trying to find new job alternatives but fearing they have no real options. That said, it is one step longer than a HBR article, but less substantive, and generally plays aggregator for stuff already out there to make the point that people need to respect and leverage their experience - not feel embarrassed not to have all the letters behind their names.

Really. For me, The Real-Life MBA is The Real-Life Business Book of the moment.

I received my book in Lisbon the day after it was launched, on April 15 (I love Amazon!). Curious, I started to read it immediately until a point I said to myself ‘Oh - this is too important to be read just when I have a bit of free time or in the midst of a million things’. Early June and I took a few days off to immerse myself in The Real-Life MBA – and you don’t have to guess… I loved it! It's like going back to your favorite teachers classroom where they make the class so much fun you forget that your actually learning anything. Could have been half the length and twice as interesting.

The book was fairly interesting. The author rarely explained how he came to some of the profiling conclusions that he reached. It seemed that the book became repetitive in the sense that the author would just say "I predicted the killer would have this set of traits, and lo and behold, he did!"
The author has led a very impressive life, and he is very aware of that fact.

Great book and a scary world out there

All these stories and profiles are just so interesting. I enjoyed the way Douglas recounts cases and his own story in the FBI. Of course all the cases are eye-openers for all the creepy things that people do, but it's also a story about great guys putting the clues together and doing something. So that's good. I picked up this book after reading Anatomy of Murder and I'll definitely keep buying Douglas and Olshaker' s books.

There Are Evil People

For those who believe that evil exists in the world and some people should not be allowed to walk among us, this book is for you. John Douglas recounts the formation of the FBI's Investigative Support Unit. He describes some to the nations most notorious serial killers and the story of how they were hunted down and, in most cases, brought to justice.

He offers a great pearl of wisdom near the end of the book regarding crime in America: "I believe that the only chance of solving our crime problem is if enought people want to. More and more courts and more prisons and better investigative techniques are fine, but the only way crime is going to go down is if all of us simply stop accepting and tolerating it in our families, our friends, and our associates."

Douglas is a strong supporter of the death penalty and explains his reasoning several times in the book. The NRA's "Refuse to be a Victim" course recommend's this book for "insight into criminals' minds". If you simply do not want to know about evil people, do not read this book.

The only negative for me was that Douglas has a very high opinion of himself and, in many of the cases, rides in and "solves" the crime with his profile of the killer. Also, not a "gun guy" he gets a reference to S&W and Colt backwards (p. 230) and refers to a .223 Mini-14 as a "high powered hunting rifle" (p. 241).

A worthwhile addition to your library.

Let Us Build Us a City is a group portrait of 11 "lost towns" in Donald Harington's native Arkansas. Yet this is no mere backwoods travelogue. His book, the author tells us, is "the story of communities that aspired to dignity and achieved serenity." These are towns, in other words, whose ambitious founders never quite managed to merge imagination with reality. "How does a once-flourishing town aspiring to call itself 'City' endure the long days of its decline?" asks Harington. The answer, in most cases, is quite well--though not perhaps in the way its inhabitants intended. One need not be familiar with Arkansas to appreciate this tour of lonely highways; there are lost towns everywhere. But seldom are they explored with such joy and wonder as in this gem of a book.

For all its brilliance, Let Us Build Us a City is nearly impossible to classify. It fuses the travel narrative with history and cultural studies--yet it reads like a novel. It's also a love story that is in no way fictional. Harington begins with a letter from a woman named Kim, who writes to praise his earlier book, Some Other Place, the Right Place. (Since the latter work is itself about a young couple's exploration of ghost towns and their subsequent romance, things immediately get off to a metafictional start.) Kim's letter leads to regular correspondence, in which she details the research she's conducting in one-horse towns throughout Arkansas. The author encourages her, she inspires him, and they agree to collaborate on a book--this one. By the time they meet, they too have learned something of expectation and hope. (Yes, they do get married, although you'll have to read the acknowledgments for details of the ceremony.)

Ultimately, Harington's book is a search for the spirit of each individual place--which is to say, the people. These lost towns are populated by dreamers, outcasts, prevaricators, drunks, madmen, and hermits. There are tales of floods, fires, gold rushes, gunshots, feuds, booms and (mostly) busts, along with other tidbits so strange they could only be true. By themselves, these would be deeply entertaining yarns. In Harington's hands, however, they amount to eloquent requiems for all his stunted cities. And perhaps these Arkansans traded in their dashed dreams for something better. After all, serenity is an admirable quality in a town, even if it happens to be an accidental one. --Shawn Carkonen

Writer Harington enlisted the aid of a high school teacher, a fan of his, to tape record her way around these small Arkansas towns whose common theme is simply that their current situations do not meet former expectations. The natives, including many mayors and law enforcement officials, relate the histories and local lore about the founders, settlers, and Indians of the past and the peculiar and not so peculiar characters of today. Murders, moonshining, race relations, entrepreneurial successes and failures, and Civil War stories loom large. Some of the individual stories and several brief asides (bluegrass music, cyclones, leaving home, etc.) are riveting, but generally the interest is regional. About the Author
Although he was born and raised in Little Rock, Donald Harington spent nearly all of his early summers in the Ozark mountain hamlet of Drakes Creek, his mother's hometown, where his grandparents operated the general store and post office. There, before he lost his hearing to meningitis at the age of twelve, he listened carefully to the vanishing Ozark folk language and the old tales told by storytellers. His academic career was in art and art history because, although determined to become a novelist (he wrote his first one at six), he felt that his ultimate teaching vocation should not interfere with his writing. He has taught art history at a variety of colleges in New York, New England, South Dakota and finally at his alma mater, the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where he has been lecturing for fifteen years in the same room where he first took courses in art history. He lives in Fayetteville with his wife Kim. His first novel, THE CHERRY PIT, about Little Rock, was published by Random House in 1965, and since then he has published twelve other novels, most all of them set in the Ozark hamlet of his creation, Stay More, based loosely upon Drakes Creek. These include LIGHTNING BUG, SOME OTHER PLACE. THE RIGHT PLACE., THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE ARKANSAS OZARKS, THE CHOIRING OF THE TREES, and, most recently, THIRTEEN ALBATROSSES. He has also written books about artists. He won the Porter Prize in 1987, the Heasley Prize at Lyon College in 1998, was inducted into the Arkansas Writers' Hall of Fame in 1999 and that same year won the Arkansas Fiction Award of Arkansas Library Association. John Guilds in his anthology, ARKANSAS, ARKANSAS, wrote, "if Miller Williams ranks as the greatest poet born, bred, nurtured, and still living in Arkansas, Donald Harington is by the same standards Arkansas's greatest novelist." The Winter 2002 SOUTHERN QUARTERLY is a "Donald Harington Special Issue" with tributes from fellow novelists, scholarly essays, interviews, and a selection of his forty-year correspondence with William Styron.

An American classic.

In this odd mix of travelogue, Americana, love story and history, Donald Harington shows us not just lost cities and lost people and places, but what he calls "lost places in the heart, of vanished life in the hidden places of the soul". And the beautiful thing, the redemption, is that these places aren't lost. In Harington's elegant prose they live on, and will live on as long as this book is read. It deserves to be read in every American history class in the country, because in this book his remembrances and his curiosity open new worlds, just next to and behind this one. Towards the end, when he includes a poem by Richard Hugo, it's as if he's bottled something inside you that you felt but didn't know. A tremendous achievement of remembrance.

The writing itself is excellent. The book isn't sure what kind of book it wants to be, and takes too long to figure it out. I got this as an e-book. It includes photos, which were not clear on the Kindle, and that was disappointing as the pictures were referenced in the story. I was glad to get to the end.

A Treasure Found Off the Beaten Path

It gives me faith in the publishing industry to find this wonderful book still in print. Donald Harington was an established Arkansas novelist when a reader named Kim wrote him out of the blue expressing the inspiration she drew from one of his stories. Harington was lecturing out of state at the time but he responded with encouragement for a project looking into the history of Arkansas places that had "City" in the name and were anything but. So, Kim took off, doing the leg work and dispatching her findings to Harington who eventually shaped them into this symphony of historical fact and human tragedies and comedies. As soon has he was able, he caught up with Kim and the two became instant soul mates. Their own story is woven into this unique blend of fact and imaginative invocation of original intentions and relinquished dreams. A pleasure to read, it sparks curiosity about the cities that never grew up in your own state (the author includes a state by state list) and a desire to go learn their stories. This is a unique story, very human, very American.

He has a master’s degree in engineering and a PhD in fluid mechanics, both from the University of Glasgow, Scotland (founded 1451). His former academic life as a tenured professor of fluids engineering included the output of a large number of technical papers, covering many aspects of engineering and bioengineering, and two textbooks: Fractals and Chaos: An Illustrated Course and the first edition of The Illustrated Wavelet Transform Handbook. At the time of publication, the author has over 100 issued US patents concerning a wide range of medical device technologies, many of these concerning the wavelet transform analysis of biosignals. He is both a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Physicist.

About the Author
Sinan Antoon is a poet, novelist, and translator. He is associate professor at the Gallatin School, New York University, and cofounder and coeditor of the cultural page of Jadaliyya. The Corpse Washer is his second novel. He lives in New York City.

The Corpse washer... The Pomegranate Alone... It is what it is! We all are Jodi!

The Corpse washer, this novel of Sinan Antoon that it is translated from its Arabic version titled “The Pomegranate Alone” by him too to English, and as I read it couple of times and now having it in English, the same feelings that struck my high walls of isolation and demolished them to appear naked as the reality is naked, bitter and painful!
Reading and absorbing the main character in this novel “Jawad or Jodi" let me think, and to believing this story is not fiction, I felt him, lived his questions, transformed myself to this character, and after I finished the reading, I was naked again, felt of huge emptiness, indeed I just want to go back between the words to find myself, yes it is sorrow, fear, and pain but whenever I read any chapter, I feel I am standing next to Jodi, as his close friend that he will never die and will never leave him alone!
This novel, the corpse washer is a must to read, if you want to see Iraq and get the picture from another corner, this novel will help you, and it is highly recommended!

Although I am no longer a novel reader as I used to be when I was younger but this book was an exception! I bought it when I heard the author in an interview on NPR and I was impressed by the dialogue and felt compelled to order the book and read it. I am an iraqi teacher who left Iraq right after the first Gulf war just like the author and I lived and witnessed most of the events in the story!! However, you don't need to be Iraqi to appreciate the novel because it is a master piece beyond description. I was quite taken by the book for days and weeks!
I highly recommend it.

An astonishingly beautifully written novel about life during post-Saddam Iraq at the height of sectarian violence. Eloquently captures the devolution of civil society into "us" and "them."
