About the Author
Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) is one of the twentieth century's greatest minds and the founder of the psychoanalytic school of psychology. His many works include The Ego and the Id; An Outline of Psycho-Analysis; Inhibitions; Symptoms and Anxiety; New Introductory Lectures on Psycho-Analysis; Civilization and Its Discontent, and others.

Peter Gay (1923―2015) was the author of more than twenty-five books, including the National Book Award winner The Enlightenment, the best-selling Weimar Culture, and the widely translated Freud: A Life for Our Time.

Freud on Religion

Reading Freud is always refreshing -- not only is he a good writer, but he also has many deep psychological insights. In his 71 page text, "The Future of an Illusion," he tackles the subject of religion. A livelong atheist, Freud argues that religion is derived from a child-like sense of helplessness in the world. Its purpose, he says, is to explain the sometimes-unfathomable world, to provide societal order, and to give comfort and happiness (particularly for the "the masses" and the poor, uneducated and oppressed). Although Freud wants to reshape civilization's relationship with religion, he also recognizes that widespread atheism could undermine societal stability. Overall, this is a good, quick read -- perfect for those interested in religion/atheism, psychology and the intersection between the two.

Religion Explained ... Again

This short book is well worth the plunge. It gives a psychoanalytic answer to the questions, Why God? and Why we still need a god? The book, written late in Freud's career, remains controversial mostly because of the nature of the subject matter. However, one should not be surprised that Freud's analysis ends as it does - suggesting that the world might be better off without religion. Many reviewers attribute this conclusion to the fact that Freud himself was not a religious man. However, another point of view might be equally valid: any psychoanalytic analysis of religion -- even by a theist -- would likely have come to the same conclusion.

In fact, Freud's conclusion -- that religion is an illusion born out of a need to surmount fear of the unknown, with its central component being a "father complex" - - is not far removed from, and actually resonates with, that of other scientists -- in particular with John F. Schumaker's "The Wings of Illusion," as well as his much deeper "The Corruption of Reality," which carries these ideas much further; or even Pascal Boyer's "Religion Explained." For a refreshing opposing point of view that is also scientific, I found Peter Berger's Rumors of Angels a sensitive counterbalance to Freud's non-emotional approach.

While this was not Freud's best work, neither is it his worse. Given his Civilizations and its Discontents, it would be difficult to imagine him not having left a firm statement on the psychoanalytic nature of religion.

Because it is Freud, it deserves Five Stars.

Scientifc Analysis of Religion

This is Freud's scientific analysis of religion. Religion, along with government and social, moral and ethical codes, or, civilization act as removing man from his true instinctal and destructive nature into a civil society. Religion is a neccessary illusion derived from men's wishes.
Freud can be applauded and admired as a great thinker and psychoanalyst. This is an essential book to read. Yet Freud misses out on the mystical experience, the religious or psychal ability to perceive the irrational, the awe of the numenous, the perceived knowledge apart from rational thinking and intellectual analysis. Or in Rudolph Otto's title, "the idea of the holy."
Freud ends his book, on page 71 with:
"No, our science is no illusion. But an illusion
it would be to suppose that what science
cannot give us we can get elsewhere."
So Freud was amazingly accurate on one religious foundation: human ability to create wishes and to civilize himself and in contrast Freud was missing a great deal in the mystical, the non-rational element, thus he discarded all religion as a universally accepted solution to the conflicts that arise in childhood relation to the father. While this may have some validity, it misses completely the symbolic mythological teachings that attempt to convey what is claimed universal to be real religious experience. This is where Freud leaves off and Carl Jung continues.

About the Author
Kenneth J. Campbell is associate professor of political science and international relations and director of the international relations program at the University of Delaware. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, enlisted in the Marines after high school, and served in Vietnam from 1968-1969, earning eight medals including the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in 1970 and joined the antiwar movement, becoming a leader in Vietnam Veterans Against the War. He earned his PhD in 1989 and has taught at several universities, written many articles, and authored the book, Genocide and the Global Village (Palgrave 2001).

to avoid such debacles in the future.

Professor Ken Campbell offers a reasoned alternative

to this cycle of deception and quagmire. In doing so

he does not entirely reject the necessity of wars:

only those without legitimate purpose and clear-cut

strategy.

recapturing "the moral high ground in international

relations" and, in the process, spare humanity the

I did not know of Kenneth Campbell but I do now. This is by far one of the clearest and most concise treatments of the subject. I found almost all of my questions anticipated and fully answered. I'm sure I'll be re-reading the book many more times.

Outstanding, emminently readable and well researched...a must read.

There are indeed some hard lessons of war. Professor Campbell has thoroughly analyzed the reasons for America's slow slide into the debacle of Vietnam and compared that situation to the current situation in Iraq. In both cases, there were solid reasons for the end result. In spite of all attempts to portray them as different, they are in essence, very similar.

In many respects, my experiences during the Vietnam War were similar to the author's. I was an F4 Phantom II fighter pilot at Ubon, Thailand at the same period of time. Although most of my missions were flown over North Vietnam and Laos, I flew strikes against Khe Sanh at the height of that battle. At the start of the war, I was a "true believer" in the cause and was most eager to participate. It's hard to give up ideas you've held onto so tenaciously for many years, but over time, I came to the belief that our involvement in Vietnam was a tragic strategic mistake. My recent book, Phantom Reflections: The Education of an American Fighter Pilot in Vietnam was my version of how those deeply held beliefs changed significantly over time.

At the start of the Iraq War, I had grave reservations about the wisdom of our proposed course of action for many of the same reasons I thought our Vietnam adventure was ill advised. This book does an excellent job of comparing the two situations and hopefully, will generate some significant discussions among those in a position to influence policy. Well done!

About the Author
Dr. Dennis P. Nolan has had a long career devoted to risk engineering, fire protection engineering, loss prevention engineering and systems safety engineering. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Business Administration from Berne University, Master of Science degree in Systems Management from Florida Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. He is a U.S. registered professional engineer in fire protection engineering in the state of California.

He is currently on the Executive Management staff of Saudi Aramco, located in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, as a Loss Prevention Consultant/Chief Fire Prevention Engineer. He covers some of the largest oil and gas facilities in the world. The magnitude of the risks, worldwide sensitivity, and foreign location make this one the highly critical fire risk operations in the world. He has also been associated with Boeing, Lockheed, Marathon Oil Company, and Occidental Petroleum Corporation in various fire protection engineering, risk analysis, and safety roles in several locations in the United States and overseas. As part of his career, he has examined oil production, refining, and marketing facilities under severe conditions and in various unique worldwide locations, including Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and North and South America. His activity in the aerospace field has included engineering support for the NASA Space Shuttle launch facilities at Kennedy Space Center (and for those undertaken at Vandenburg Air Force Base, California) and “classified” national defense systems.

Dr. Nolan has received numerous safety awards and is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, He is the author of many technical papers and professional articles in various international fire safety publications. He has written four other books, Handbook of Fire and Explosion Protection Engineering Principles for Oil, Gas, Chemical and Related Facilities (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Editions), Fire Fighting Pumping Systems at Industrial Facilities (1st & 2nd Editions), Encyclopedia of Fire Protection (1st & 2nd Editions), and Loss Prevention and Safety Control Terms and Definitions. Dr. Nolan has also been listed for many years in “Who’s Who in California”, Who’s Who in the West”, Who’s Who in the World” and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering” publications. He was also listed in “Outstanding Individuals of the 20th Century” (2001) and “Living Legends” (2004), published by the International Biographical Center, Cambridge, England.

About the Author
W. Scott Poole is associate professor in history at the College of Charleston. He is the author of five books dealing with American religion, race, and popular culture.

Great Book for Anyone...almost

I rented this book because it was required in the class I took with Dr. Poole and wish I had purchased it instead. So I am, and I'm also getting it for a relative with a background in American Studies. It is informative as to the place of the Devil specifically and of religion generally in America from its roots onward and encompasses history, politics, psychology, entertainment, and art. There are even sections on comic books, if that's your forte. The author, who writes simply with a touch of humor, makes little pretense on how he feels about the negative aspects of religion in America; so a reader might not want this if h/she is ultra-conservative and doesn't want his feathers ruffled. In other words, buy this if you are open to new ideas and slants, want to learn, be informed, and...perhaps...have your vision of America changed.
