Wolfram Nagel is a UX and Conceptual Designer at SETU GmbH, a German software engineering company. As Head of UX he supervises internal and external web and software projects in the areas of content design, UI architecture and visual design. He is an expert in interface, interaction and user experience design. Wolfram studied Information Design (diploma) and Design Management (Master of Arts) at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany (University of Applied Sciences). Since 2011, he has lectured and hosted talks & workshops about Multiscreen Experience Design at conferences such as IxDA Berlin, Usability Professionals Germany and the German IA Summit and at and for universities, academies and agencies.

About the Author
Michael G. LaFosse has been an origami artist for decades, and is internationally regarded as a leading authority and master of the art. The author of many books, kits and videos relating to paperfolding and hand papermaking, LaFosse produces fine paper art and commercial designs for a variety of international clients. His work has been shown in museums and galleries around the world, and is currently on display at the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts.

Richard L. Alexander co-founded the Origamido Studio, a teaching center, gallery and design studio in Massachusetts, with Michael G. LaFosse in 1996.

Some repetition of Advanced Origami, but a beautiful book nonetheless

I give this book 4 stars with reservations. Many of the patterns are VERY similar to those in Advanced Origami. However, between the two books, I'd advocate buying this one, so, hence the four stars.

LaFosse's books are unique in that they focus on paper and on wet folding. He empahsizes the art of folding, not intricate folds. His patterns tend to have a fairly low number of steps, but in order to generate the desired final product, a lot of time will be spent finishing.

The repetition starts in the "Techniques" section at the front of the book when he talks about making paper. Identical photographs are used in multiple cases between this book and Advanced Origami.

Entirely new patterns not similar to those found in Advanced Origami include a lobster, a fairly weak monk seal design, a great manatee fold, a cormorant, a great penguin, a modular flower requiring several sheets of paper for an un-extraordinary result, a fairly mundane fighter jet, and an amazing alligator. It's basically worth buying the book just for the alligator. Folds that gave me deja vu included the grackle, whale, butterfly, turtle, and orchid. (Sound familiar?)

Anyway, it certainly seems worth having one of LaFosse's books in your library if you're an origami enthusiast. If I had to choose, I'd pick this one. If the first one totally rocked your world, then you'll want to pick this one as well.

These books are for an intermediate or better folder, in my opinion. Complete beginners will probably find them a bit frustrating.

We purchased this for our grandson who learned some basic origami in school art class and on the internet. The book is large and arrived in beautiful condition. It had an abundance of items and patterns which even basic users could use as well as more advanced patterns. An overall good buy!

Is it surprising that this obscure book is suddenly number two in sales in its category as this review is being written one week after the election of Donald Trump?

Fascism is a loaded word, and this book, "Friendly Fascism" attempts to analyze the fascist currents in modern democracies with some degree of scholarly removal so that we can look rationally at the state of our society. Gross was showing how many elements of Fascism were firmly embedded in American Society in the 1980s. While the historical context of the book is not up to date, the analysis is still very relevant. The book gives the reader some understanding of Fascism and its history, so that the reader can identify and resist the Fascism of corporativism. If one were to apply Gross's analysis one might say that the election of Trump was not the election of a potential Fascist to turn American Society Fascist. Instead, the dissatisfaction that led to Trump's election was probably driven by deep dissatisfaction with economic hardship and income inequality that to some extent was a result of fascistic elements already present in our country.

For those of us struggling to come to grips with what is happening in the US, this book is illuminating and well worth reading. I have found it compelling. The ideas in it are not new to me - they have been picked up by other, later, writers like Chris Hedges. But the historical context on the whole is quite good, and for me I felt that it did - oddly - give me some comfort.

Sad to say, Gross's predictions and warnings have joined those of the distopian novelists; they have been taken as a roadmap, not a warning. We are closer than ever to becoming the world's worst state.

One of the best books I've read

Before I started I didn't expect this book would turn out so good. The book is full of bhakti (and is like darshan of baba) and precious lessons from the life of Baba Lokenath. I personally got very inspired to develop even more bhakti toward my own guru after I read about this great yogi.

One thing I need to clear is about one of the reviewers who saw Baba as closed hermit. The reason Baba Lokenath practiced so austerily was to make his all systems fit to receive the Grace which would later benefit all humanity as he became a Loka (World) Guru. He was not ordinary yogi who worked for his own salvation and this can be seen clearly in the book. Swami Vijaya Krishna Goswami, who is mentioned in the book, had met many great yogis including Trailanga Swami, Ramakrishna etc. so it is not accident that he held in such high esteem Baba Lokenath.

I personally felt blessed by Baba Lokenath by reading the book and I thank the author for the seva he has done in writing it.

Another spiritual giant from Bengal - In some ways on par with Autobiography of a Yogi

The life of Baba Lokanath recorded is this book may be difficult to believe for some. But there are enough references to other known individuals and correlation of known facts to help one surrender enough to get to the point where one's heart is melted.
Of particular note is his interactions with Trilanga Swami mentioned by Paramahansa Yogananda.

Lessons on bhakti & karma yoga are significant. His example of unflinching & one-pointed focus & determination until he reached The Goal at age 90 raise the bar for readers. Then after traveling the world he settled down to share his spiritual bounty. The book is highly motivating and a must read.

I wish it were available in print in the U.S.

Having grown up with Swami Yogananda " Autobiography of a Yogi', that book represented to me a "Gold Standard" on yogic writing, In the same manner Swami Shuddhaanandaa has given a very vivid account of a Divine Soul, whose powers are too high to be understood by mere mortals.The anecdotal references, the clear way of narration, depicts the force of the personality of Baba Lokenath Brahmachari After reading this book,one feels as cleaned as after having taking a bath in the Ganges. Any interest in understanding ore hand speciments, this is a good book.

If you are involved in any way in hand identification of mineral exploration samples, this is a book to get. The images are excellent. The detailed descriptions are succinct and take into account the limit of what can be done with a hand sample. Provides logical steps to systematically examine ore textures with at most a hand lens. Recommended.

Best Resource for Practical Applications

I've been using the previous editions of this work, which is a compilation of four volumes, for many years. I find it the most useful resource for recognizing and interpreting textures in mineral deposits when trying to gain an understanding of mineralisation. Ore textures generally receive little attention in both academic research and industry, which is a shame because they contain a wealth of information that is vital in understanding the mineralising processes that produced the deposits we study. Too often micro-analytic geochemical studies are undertaken without first establishing the textural context of the samples. If your job is to unravel the history of the rocks in a mineral deposit then this is the text for you.

Excellent content, average reproductions

Firstly, the content. This is an excellent book. Every field geologist should have it. Period. it's full of practical and useful information illustrated with good slides.
Now for the bad part. I have the 5 volume set of soft covers from EGRU. They are excellent with good color control, big plates, sharp pictures, good contrast. I got the hardback book because I wanted them all in a nice portable collection. However, the paper on the hardback book is matte and should be at least semi gloss. The photos are sometimes cropped, they are definitely clearly lower resolutions than the original books (I compared side by side) and the contrast is worse. Plate 16 Vol 1 loses the fine disseminations and micro veinlets in a dark photo that has become mostly black. Worst of all, there is a slight red color cast to all the photos, clearly different from both the original book and the jpg's on file (available free at extras.springer.com). Color is critical for alteration analysis.
Unless they have a better version, I'd skip this and get the originals. However, if you don't have it yet and can't get the originals, this is a FINE book and will serve you well.
